The ECAL series (in odd-numbered years) has always been separate from the Alife conferences (even-numbered), and traditionally there has been an informal method of selecting amongst offers/bids put forward at the preceding ECAL.

So the current ECAL09 in Budapest was selected from 3 bids put forward at ECAL07, after a consultation process with those who attended ECAL07, the ALife community at large (via a webpage), and previous ECAL organisers.
